Pastor Reflection on Did God Cuss with Rev. Dr. Bradley Johnson - Theology Academy Podcast
Welcome to "I Didn't Learn That at Sunday School," where host Brad Spencer bridges the gap between scholarly insights and church settings. In this engaging episode, Brad sits down with his former pastor, Pastor Brad Johnson, for a thought-provoking conversation exploring the evolution of language, the role of profanity in the Bible, and the intersection of these topics with modern faith and pastoral duties.
Guest Introduction:
Pastor Brad Johnson shares his journey from a youth pastor to a senior pastor, reflecting on his upbringing in South Portland, Maine, and his educational path through Moody Bible Institute and Grace Theological Seminary. Now retired, he remains actively involved in pastoral care and community engagement.
Key Discussion Points:
Background and Pastoral Journey: Pastor Johnson recounts his experiences in ministry, from youth pastor to senior pastorship, and his current involvement in pastoral care and community activities.
Profanity in the Bible: The conversation delves into the use of language, cultural differences in what is considered profane, and the historical context of taboo words in the Bible. Pastor Johnson and Brad explore how these elements impact our understanding of scripture and faith.
Personal Anecdotes and Reflections: Pastor Johnson shares childhood experiences with language, family discussions on acceptable language, and the influence of cultural and generational perspectives on what is deemed profane.
Language Evolution and Euphemisms: They discuss how words change over time, the development of euphemisms, and their significance in maintaining polite discourse within faith communities.
Did God Cuss?: Building on a previous podcast episode, they explore the intriguing question of whether God uses strong or harsh language in the Bible, considering historical, cultural, and linguistic contexts.
Taking God's Name in Vain: The discussion introduces the recent work of Carmen Imes on the commandment against taking God's name in vain, along with the generalization of the commandment in Christian circles to include the name Jesus Christ.
Biblical Authority vs. Church Tradition: They touch upon the tension between "sola scriptura" and church traditions, highlighting the balance between biblical authority and historical practices in evangelical faith.
Historical Figures and Personal Nuances: The conversation includes insights into historical figures like Martin Luther, discussing his reputed use of foul language and its impact on contemporary perceptions of his theological contributions.
Join us for a comprehensive exploration of the complexities of language, faith, and cultural norms.

Even though in the Six Days of Creation there are certain implicit elements that appear to be out of sync with God’s plan, such as darkness and chaos, at every stage of creation God defines it as “good” (Hebrew tov). The darkness and chaos seem to imply the absence of God, both in the Bible and in the Ancient Near Eastern literature, such as the Babylonian epic “Enuma Elish,” where the world is...

I say 'you' are Gods (those Gods that Yahweh directly speaks to in the council) can only refer to the other Gods (such as Yahweh himself) who are sons of the Most High (El Elyon). "But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes." This phrase again can only refer to the Gods who are immortal. Each God was responsible for their own allotment (given to them by El) of nation/territory this is why the divine council was called for to settle divine ruling matters. The Holy Trinity assuming that this was what John was referring to was absent in the Garden of Eden.

Church historians will say Peter was the leader of the Roman church? which the Catholicism claims yet not once did Paul greet Peter in his letters to Rome nor any direct statement from any of the church fathers claiming Peter was. Yet they wont give Ignatius that he was the boy that Jesus sat on his knee due to no letters claiming this? I’m just pointing this out from what I know so far. I am currently doing a deep dive in to the church fathers. Thank you for this video!

Paul writing to Rome with no greetings to Peter what so ever…. If he was the Pope or head of the church I would think it’s quite important to include his name. Again, can you provide a source? Under christianity those that are Muslims and j’ws were forced either to convert, or d!e. Under the caliphate both jews, and christian’s were allowed to practice their faiths, as long as they pay the Jizya tax. This is just, in fact only hypocrites, and liars would argue against the Tax, since they pay taxes on their housing, money, and products, yet do not complain.

Theology Academy is great blessing Christians wanting a much broader perspective and understanding of our Christian faith and heritage. Along with the Bible Project you have really opened up the importance of shifting our paradigm and gaining a much broader understanding of how these early first followers of Christ would have been hearing our Lord especially from an eastern perspective and ultimately how the early Church spread throughout the mediterranean regions. Regardless of if you are Orthodox, Catholic, or one of the many denominations of Protestantism. This History of the Church (1st-5th Century) has been great. I am listening to the Catholic Brothers "First 500 Years" Series Podcast on UA-cam and that has been incredible paired along with your documentary. It really gives insight to what we would have possibly been seeing on the ground in that period and the impact it would have had on the formation of the early Church. Leaving us all to answer the question....does my church even remotely resemble the early church and if not. Why? Awesome contribution the our Christian faith!!!

There was no Orthodox Church in the 9th century truth be told. There was but one Catholic Church up until the east and west excommunicated each other - thus we had the eastern and western lungs of the body of Christ. The Catholic Church and the Orthodox Catholic church. The western church continuing with the Primacy of Rome and the Eastern church coming to reject it finally. Many Eastern "Orthodox" churches have come back into communion with the Bishop of Rome since then whilst most Eastern churches still reject the Primary of Rome although admit Rome and the Bishop of have are first amongst equals. Ignatius is the creator of the Popacy and Roman-panteion like hierarchies within the churches. After the dead of the last Apostle John he started to use his chance to create his own version of the christianity (more politician movement than a religious movement), which ends up with creation of the roman catholic church and the greek orthodoxy and the adaption of the 'queen of The Sky -God Mary" blasphemy . Not Jesus nor Peter was the creator of the roman-catholism, it was Ignatius. just read his letters, you will feel a a spirit which is not christ-like.
